The acts of goodness

The seven areas and twenty-one acts you record from, the test for what counts, and the words you write.

Every act you record comes from one list: Mohanji's acts of goodness. Seven areas, twenty-one kinds of act, examples for every age. Knowing the list is most of the training; after a week it is in your head.

The full catalog with examples for each age band is in the reference, and on the public site at goodnessfactor.com/acts-of-goodness.

The test

Ask one question: did the child do something for someone or something else, beyond what was expected of them? A six-year-old who fetches a teacher when a friend is hurt, a ten-year-old who stops a quarrel before it grows, a fifteen-year-old who stays after school to set up the hall. Yes to all three.

Finishing homework, sitting still, winning a race: good things with their own rewards, and not on this list.

Age matters for the examples, not for the points

The record screen shows examples for the class's age band, so what counts in a Seeds class (4 to 7) is different from what counts in a Trees class (15 to 18). The points are the same: ten, always.

The words you write

The optional note is the part families remember. Write what you saw, plainly:

  • "Walked away from a fight and told me instead."
  • "Taught a friend long division at lunch."
  • "Watered the class plants every morning this week."

Not: "Good boy today." Not a grade, not a comparison with another child, not a judgment about the child. The note goes to the family the same day and is read aloud on Friday, so write it as you would say it to them.

Your school's own acts

A school can add acts of its own under any area, for example "Helping in the library". They appear in your record screen with the others and are worth the same ten points. The head manages them under Settings.

The peaceful week is not an act

A peaceful week is confirmed once a week for every child who harmed no one, five points. It is the baseline; acts of goodness add to it. A peaceful week
